The Piece of Wood is a melee weapon that can be obtained while scavenging in nearly every location. They can be reliably obtained by breaking almost any piece of furniture that is made of wood (sofas, cupboards, etc.).
The Piece of Wood is quick to swing but has lower power than the standard for melee weapons. This, combined with a high break chance make it most useful as an emergency weapon.
